The Police Activities League of Egg Harbor Township and Atlantic County offers a variety of programs, leagues, events, and services for our local community! One of our biggest passions is providing opportunities for our local community to learn more about STEM! STEM encompasses science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This field encompasses a wide variety of specific areas such as robotics, astronomy, forensics, coding, and SO much more! We want to introduce everyone to all of our STEM opportunities, starting with our STEM & Robotics workshops!
Our STEM & Robotics Workshops
Lego WeDo
Summer Camp, fall, winter & spring workshops
This workshop is designed for the elementary learner, students in first through third grade. Lego WeDo introduces students to the world of robotics by using working motors, sensors, and age-appropriate computer programming. During the eight week program, students will build animals, soccer players, and other characters, then add movement with fun, drag and drop software. Your child will have fun while developing their skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics! Lego WeDo is an age-appropriate introduction to some of the principles of robotics, programming, and engineering!
WeDo 2.0
Summer Camp, fall, winter & spring workshops
WeDo 2.0 is a program designed for second through fifth graders that makes science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and coding come to life. The unique combination of the Lego Brick, classroom-friendly software, and engaging, standards-based projects results in a resource that builds students' confidence to ask questions, define problems and design their own solutions by putting STEM learning directly in their hands! We also offer special sessions outside of the four program blocks for groups of eight or more students which is a great resource for small classes and homeschooling.
NASA Astro Camp
Two summer camp sessions
Our NASA Astro camp is for children in grades five through nine and is loaded with hands-on activities and exploration of NASA missions, providing a connection for all youth to science missions, challenges, and resources. Earth Science, Planetary Science, Human Explorations with Moon to Mars and Rocketry will be explored. Activities include designing & building a crew exploration vehicle, building wind turbines, and moon exploration. One of our goals is to inspire future generations to learn about space exploration and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics developing pathways to S.T.E.M. fields.
Mindstorms EV 3
Summer Camp, fall, winter & spring workshops
Our Lego Mindstorms EV3 program lets students in grades five through nine turn Lego creations into live robots that follow their every command. Students get to work with motors, sensors, and a programmable brick, to create and command robots of their wildest imagination, including five cool robot characters as part of the advanced builds. Students follow building instructions and use the application to command the robot. They will program robots to drive, talk and move via the intuitive software program, the programmable brick, and PAL computer.
This hands-on program allows students to work independently and at their own pace. Children will learn and develop their skills with the guidance of PAL Robotics counselors.
Smart Car/Robot
Fall, winter & spring workshops
Our smart car and smart robot workshops are designed for students in grades five through nine. In the smart car section of the workshop, participants will get educational, hands-on experience with Arduino programming, electronic assembling, and robotics knowledge. Under the guidance of PAL staff, participants will receive everything they need to build a vehicle, including 24 kinds of module parts including obstacle avoidance, line tracing module, infrared remote control, and Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR via Android phones and tablets. In the smart robot section of the workshop, students will program Jimu Robot on their smartphone or tablet with the free Jimu app. The BuilderBots kit has all the parts to build 2 robots or you can invent your own! Both of these robots run on threads, with an infrared sensor allowing them to detect objects to pick up or move around. LED flashing lights allow them to move in the dark and express emotions! Everyone keeps their creations at the end of the program!
GoBilda Robotics
Summer Camp, fall, winter & spring workshops
Our GoBILDA robotics build workshop is for students in grades seven through ten. Under the watchful eyes of members of our two-time NJ First Tech Challenge State Champion Robotics Team 7149, the Enforcers, students will use the GoBilda building systems to reverse engineer a flawed robot design. They will build, test, and identify flaws prior to rebuilding the robot to conquer the PAL-modified First Tech Challenge course. GoBilda is a complete design system for students who are serious about engineering. Featuring heavy-duty, aircraft-grade aluminum elements for construction, powerful drive motors, and expandable capabilities, GoBilda provides the ideal platform for creativity. Whether students want to build a basic square chassis robot base with a remote control or incorporate other electronics to design a highly specific autonomous robot, this system is unlimited. If you are serious about your engineering future and hope to be on PAL's nationally competitive First Tech Challenge Team, this is a must-attend class to give you the edge.
National CSI Camp
Fall workshop
The Police Activities League of Egg Harbor Township and Atlantic County has partnered with National CSI to offer a new National CSI Camp this fall for students in grades five through nine. This camp will cover STEM concepts relating to forensics and solving crime scenes. The lecture, labs, and exercises will cover many “CSI” topics including collecting, analyzing, and classifying fingerprints, creating and examining blood spatter patterns, casting footprints, and so much more! This is a very hands-on and interactive enrichment class for students taught by current and retired detectives!
A main focus of the Police Activities League of Egg Harbor Township and Atlantic County is to offer a variety of fun and educational STEM programs. In addition to our camps and workshops, we have clubs, research programs, and competitive teams. In our efforts to share STEM education, we try to provide opportunities for as many children in our community as possible. We have limited funding for at-risk youth and have scholarships available for families that need financial assistance in having their children attend these workshops. If you are interested in this assistance please get in touch with us. If you are interested in supporting the work that we do as a non-profit organization you can find more information about donating or volunteering on our website!
