Autumn is rolling in, which means it's the perfect time to blend the excitement of the change in season with the thrill of scientific discovery. This year, why not celebrate with some Fall-themed STEM experiments that are both educational and perfect for a cozy fall day? From leaf prints to candy experiments, these activities will ignite curiosity and creativity in learners of all ages. In this blog, we’ve got four festively fun STEM experiments from Science Buddies for you and your family to try!

Leaf Rubbings

Nature is full of objects with many different shapes and patterns. Each of these natural patterns has evolved over a very long time and serves a specific function that usually helps a plant, animal, or other organism to survive. This activity will help students explore the branching pattern of trees, plants, and leaves by making drawings and a leaf rubbing to compare different branching patterns.

Candy Rainbow

This is a fun project you can try with leftover candy before or after Halloween. With some candy, hot water, and a little bit of science, you will make some fun art and teach your child about basic chemistry concepts! If you have multiple types of candies, you can try variations of the experiment to see which candies create the best rainbow!

Make Your Own Rock Candy

Thanks to Halloween, Fall is often the season of candy. If you want to find a way to turn your child enjoying a sweet treat into an educational opportunity, making your own rock candy is the perfect activity! Your child can learn about crystalline solids and seed crystals while they wait for their delicious treat to form. See who in the family can grow their crystal candy the largest before they give in to temptation and eat their sweet treat!

Secret Message With Fall Spices

Who doesn’t want to be able to write down secret messages that only their friends can decode? With this activity, your child will learn the basics of chemical reactions while making fun messages to be decoded. If you’re freshly stocked up on turmeric for autumnal cooking, you and your family can make decodable invisible messages in just a few minutes!

Where Can I Find STEM Programs Near Me?

If you want to expand beyond at-home STEM projects, the Police Activities League of Egg Harbor Township and Atlantic County offers a variety of STEM workshops, clubs, and teams throughout the year! For children who are interested in competing, PAL has its own competitive robotics team and hosts STEM competitions throughout the year.
